Fishing Report 7-22-25
Wow it’s hot outside!. Only the bream are spawning still since they do it about 6 times a year. In the freshwater fishing world, everything is biting. The crappie are shallow in the morning and the evening, and deep the rest of the day. To keep cool they are hiding under docks, weed beds and trash piles and are gorging on minnows, jigs, and Bobby Garlands. The Bream which include bluegill, pumpkin seeds, red ears, shell crackers, stump knockers, green sunfish and red breasts are hitting on crickets and night crawlers. They are still making babies, but they are always hungry. The bass are eating everything in your tackle box – crank baits, spinner baits, glide baits, top water lures, swim baits, jigs, and live bait. The Catfish are hitting at night on cut bait, live bait and chicken livers.
Salt water inshore fishing is really good on trout, sea mullet, croakers, flounder, red drum cobia, and pin fish…..lol. Off shore the Spanish, kings, wahoo, tuna, mahi, and albacore fishing is really good trolling. The occasional cobia is still being caught ( best tasting fish that swims). The bottom fishing is good too. The Carolina Princess reports catches of bee liners, trigger fish, black sea bass, grouper, and grunts.
Take a kid fishing and please pick up your trash, especially your used fishing line.

Schools out!!! (Except for the fish.) The spawning is done and now it’s dinner time. In the freshwater fishing world, everything is biting. The crappie are hiding under docks, weed beds and trash piles to stay cool and are feasting on minnows, jigs, and beetle spins. The Bream, which include bluegill, pumpkin seeds, red ears, shell crackers, stump knockers, green sunfish and red breasts, are hitting on crickets, night crawlers, and lures that imitate bugs and spiders. The bass are eating everything in your tackle box – crank baits, spinner baits, glide baits, top water lures, swim baits, jigs, and live bait.

The spawn is on in Eastern Carolina. The freshwater fish are doing that thang to bring great fishing to future generations. The crappie are in full spawn mode right now and can be caught with Bobby Garland jigs, Blue Ice is a great color. Plus minnows and small crank baits. The bluegill will spawn with every full moon up to 7 times a year. Beetle spins, night crawlers and crickets are always a good choice. The bass are guarding their nests now and they will destroy a Baby Brush Hog. Green pumpkin is the best color.
On the saltwater side of things Kelly at Squidder’s in Vandemere caught some nice speckled trout last week. Plus the drum fishing has been good. Still a little early for off shore fishing except for tuna and wahoo.
Please pick up your trash. This old salt went crappie fishing at Shearon Harris Lake near Raliegh recently and there was 1000x more trash than fishermen and it was crowded. It takes no effort at all to pick up your trash and throw it in a trash can. And hey, don’t forget to take a kid fishing.

Unless you want to go to the gulf stream and catch tuna, wahoo, king mackerel and bottom fish you might have a tough time catching fish inshore. Speckled Trout and Red Drum are being caught inshore on Gulp.
Freshwater fishing on the other hand is still good . The crappie are biting on minnows, jigs, and Bobby Garland blue ice and pearl white soft body swim baits near brush piles, and vertical structures. The Bream eat and are eaten year around and night crawlers are the thing. The bass are hitting on crank baits, and spinner baits. The catfishing is ok on minnows, cut bait and stink baits like Catfish Charlie. Be sure you wash your hands before hugging the Mrs when you get home.
Take a kid fishing and pick up your trash.
