Someone is looking out for our oceans. Hawaii Pacific University’s Center for Marine Debris Research has removed more than 84 tons of abandoned fishing gear from the North Pacific Ocean over the past three years. The effort, which is known as the Bounty Project, pays commercial fishermen to collect dangerous gear like nets and floats while they’re out at sea. These recoveries can help prevent the debris from harming marine wildlife. Researchers say the program shows how working with the fishing industry can dramatically speed up ocean cleanup efforts.
