May is Stroke Awareness Month, and an Iowa barber, Craig Hunt, is teaching his community to recognize symptoms of a stroke early. He suffered a stroke 10 years ago, WHILE he was working. In partnership with the American Heart Association of Iowa, Craig is now spearheading Blood Pressures in Barbershops. It’s a statewide effort to bring local nurses into barbershops and take blood pressures for FREE. Those free blood pressure checks are now available in more than 80 locations across Iowa……. A rescue dog in New Zealand became a hero after rescuing its new owner from a house fire. The man was sleeping, but the dog bit him to wake him up before the fire spread, and he escaped with only minor injuries. Unfortunately, the home was destroyed, but officials say the man probably wouldn’t have survived without the dog rescuing him.…..And finally…………
On Tuesday, a crew from an IN fire department was dispatched to check on reports of a vehicle stranded in floodwater. The driver was able to safely return to shore without assistance, but as crews prepared to leave, firefighters heard a baby deer crying out while being swept downstream in the fast-moving water. Captain Joe Sinclair waded into the rushing water, wearing a rope held by another firefighter, and rescued the fawn, carrying it safely back to land. Medics treated the animal on scene, then it was turned over to a local wildlife rescue group.
