After decades of quietly showing up before the bell and staying after the hallways emptied, Mario Gonzalez, a beloved janitor at Maryland’s Our Lady of Good Counsel High School, reached his retirement date. He thought he was just walking through an ordinary day, but instead, he was met by a sea of students and staff lining the halls, cheering and celebrating the man who had spent 39 years taking care of them. Mario was born prematurely with cerebral palsy, and limited verbal abilities, and doctors doubted he would survive long after birth. His younger brother, Jorge said that it filled his heart to see this outpouring of love. “I have to say he’s my hero. This was fitting for him. He deserved it.”
