78-year-old James Thomas has been running the New York City Marathon since 1980, and he just completed his 43rd. He was the last man to finish the marathon, walking up the chute late at night to a crowd cheering him on with glow sticks and phones. James spent over 14 hours on the course, and after crossing the finish line, he shared that this would be his final marathon………………..A tiny island called Corvo off Portugal just went dark. And it’s for the birds. For five nights at the end of every October, Corvo shuts off its public lights from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m. so young birds aren’t confused by artificial light while making their first trips out to sea. The birds are called Cory’s shearwaters . . . and since 2015, more than 6,000 fledglings have been rescued on Corvo alone……………..And finally…………….
A Florida couple noticed a middle schooler sitting in the dirt while waiting for her bus at the end of their driveway, so they surprised her with a bench. Maren and David Douglass are teachers themselves, so they couldn’t stand seeing where the girl had to wait for her bus. After they installed the bench, they caught the girl’s reaction on their security camera. The girl jumped for joy, and she later left them a thank-you note. The couple also added a mini free library beside the bench, where neighborhood kids can now borrow and return books.(Here’s video.)
