ECU researchers helped identify a World War II airman missing for more than 80 years. In 1944, 21-year-old Staff Sgt. Given Grooms was shot down over Italy. Grooms was one of 10 men aboard the plane and one of seven whose body had been undiscovered. In 2017, ECU’s Maritime Studies Program began partnering with the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency, and in 2018 the program was able to take a trip to Italy, where Groom’s plane was shot down, studying and researching the site. He was accounted for on June 9, his identity was announced on October 7, and then Staff Sgt. Grooms was returned to family and finally laid to rest in his home state of Ohio after more than 80 years away.
