When Graham Walker sold Fibrebond, a manufacturing company founded by his father, he said the deal would only move forward if employees were taken care of. As part of the $1.7 billion sale, Walker required that 15% of the proceeds be set aside for workers — even though they didn’t own company stock. The Wall Street Journal reports that about $240 million went to 540 full-time employees, each scoring roughly $443,000 paid out over five years. Walker said the condition was a non-negotiable part of the sale, believing the people who had stayed with the company through decades of ups and downs deserved to share in its success.
