Two police officers are being praised for saving a man’s life on the Gold Star Bridge in Connecticut using compassion instead of force. A man was suicidal and perched on a bridge barrier more than 100 feet above the river, but the officers worked to keep the man talking, and he told them he just wanted a hug. So, one of the officers calmly promised him one if he climbed down. The man then climbed down and got the hug he wanted. This safely ended the standoff in less than two minutes . . . and the man was transported to a hospital for mental health care. If you or someone you know needs help, please call or text 988 for the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline.
