Three wind turbines spinning on Antarctica’s Ross Island have made an enormous impact on the energy market of the continent. They mitigated roughly 122,000 gallons of diesel fuel consumption, and all the associated costs of shipping fuel there. (Here’s an old profile on the Ross Island wind farm.)………………. The Dartmouth Spartans are a high school baseball team in Nova Scotia . . . and they haven’t won a game in six years, but they still have a blast every time they take the field. Their team captain says they lose by the mercy rule about 80% of the time . . . and some players have never even played baseball before joining the team. The program has no performance standards, which means it gives more students a chance to play. The team used to be co-ed, but recently Dartmouth’s girls formed their own team and earned the school’s first win, and the boys were thrilled for them. (Here’s a news report.)
Some Houston high school students are getting some real-world job experience by running a new auto shop that’s open to the public. It’s part of the Barbara Jordan Career Center, and they are doing oil changes, tire rotations, and inspections under the supervision of instructors. The prices are cheap for the customers . . . the kids get some real on-the-job training . . . and any money raised by the shop will go back toward opportunities for future automotive students. So, it’s a win-win-win.
