Michael Stipe and Aaron Dessner performed “No Time For Love,” the title track from Stipe’s collaborative album with Big Red Machine, during their appearance on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” on Tuesday (June 23).
The R.E.M. frontman, who appears with a surgical mask for a while, remains drenched in a blue light almost right through the performance. Dessner appears on a split screen, playing his piano.
“Where did this all begin to change?/The lockdown memories can’t sustain,” Stipe sings over Dessner’s plaintive piano melody. “This glistening hanging free fall.”
The official video for “No Time Love” was released earlier this month. Stipe co-wrote the song with Dessner.
“‘No Time for Love Like Now’ was written last fall, but when the reality of the COVID-19 pandemic, social distancing and self-isolation descended, the words felt like they were written about this time,” R.E.M. had posted on Instagram about the song.
