WSFL Visits the New Bern National Cemetary

While 2020 presented a number of challenges for many of our local and national traditions, this didn’t stop the folks at Wreaths Across America from collecting multiple donations for the veterans interned right here in Eastern North Carolina this month. One of those locations was the historic New Bern National Cemetary.

We stopped by on an overcast Monday morning just prior to a service taking place. While during this time the cemetary is limited to funeral traffic only, they were kind enough to allow WSFL to stop and observe the preparations and enjoy some of the wreaths laid just days prior on site.

Because of COVID-19, wreath layings were limited to a couple of dozen vehicles at a time, but as you can see, this didn’t stop an impressive number of donated wreaths to be placed over the vast grounds of the cemetary.

The cemetary is home to the New Jersey Monument, the Massachusetts Monument, the Connecticut Monument, and the Rhode Island Monument. It contains various placards and displays detailing the history of the cemetary.

New Bern National Cemetery was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1997.
