Seven years ago, TX college student Joey Romano was skateboarding when he swerved to avoid a car and fell, breaking his wrist. He called an Uber instead of an ambulance, because he was worried about the cost. Driver Beni Lukumu helped him into the car, drove him to the ER, then signed him in and sat with him for six hours. Romano’s grandmother made it to the hospital as he was being discharged. She offered Lukumu payment, which he declined, but he joined them for dinner, which cemented a friendship lasting more than seven years. Romano says that one act of kindness helped him see the good in the world again, and Lukumu hopes people will take from their story a message about the power of human connection, how simple acts of compassion can create bonds and change lives.
