Today’s Good News 3-1-24

A World War Two vet in Pennsylvania named Ralph Perkner turned 103 this week, and credits his longevity to having daughters.  He’s got three of them and told a reporter they’ve always made him “stronger.”………….. L.A. firefighters were able to rescue a 1,200-pound horse who sank into a sinkhole that opened up on someone’s property.  The horse was in mild distress, but she was otherwise okay.  And she got some carrots afterward. (Here’s an EXCELLENT play-by-play of the situation from one of the firefighters.  And here’s her getting a bath after they pulled her out.)…………..And finally………..

The Houston Zoo just did something big for something very small.  A Peruvian stick bug ended up with a floppy neck after she molted and shed her exoskeleton. This species of grasshopper spends most of their time climbing up trees, so it was vital to keep her head level, so it wouldn’t flop backwards while climbing. So they used part of a Q-tip and engineered a tiny neck brace that saved her life.  They took it off two days later, and she’s all better.  (Here’s a photo.)
